Three masters of Japanese ceramicsOn the occasion of Asia Week New York (September 2025), we are delighted to present a group exhibition of works by three artists: Koinuma Michio, Kawamoto Goro, and Tsuboshima Dohei. The artists, who emerged in post-war Japan, explored the radical idea that ceramic vessels serve as a mode of individualistic expression, expanding the category of "Object-vessels" within Japanese ceramics. Three masters of Japanese Ceramics 11 - 19 September 2025Koinuma Michio, Tsuboshima Dohei, and Kawamoto Goro are three singular voices in Japanese ceramics, each celebrated for their technical virtuosity and expansive creative range. The three artists emerged during a time when the idea of a ceramicist was being challenged: by identifying themselves as individualistic artists, these three figures were part of a generation that expanded the “Object-Vessel” category in Japanese ceramics. By expanding self-expression through vessels, these artists also broadened the ceramic category in the latter half of the 20th century. This September, we are delighted to present a group exhibition of ceramic works by Koinuma, Tsuboshima, and Kawamoto on the occasion of Asia Week New York!
This exhibition features a catalog with two contributing essays by Japanese art scholars Kazuko Todate and Daniel McOwan alongside high resolution images of the artists and their work.
